Plaisance man gets $600k bail for causing death by dangerous driving

A resident of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was placed on bail in the sum of $600,000 after he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Adrian Evans was arrested shortly after the the accident which occurred at around 2:30hrs on Sunday along the Sparendaam Public Road, ECD.

Evans was driving motorcar PAB 2495 when it collided with motorcycle CP 5910 driven by 32-year-old Steven Kumar, who resided at Non Pareil, ECD.

Police said investigations revealed that the motorcar was proceeding east along the southern driving lane of the northern carriageway while the motorcycle was proceeding west along the northern driving lane of the southern carriageway.

“The motorcar reportedly made a right turn at the intersection of the said public road, resulting in a collision with the motorcycle,” police said in a statement.

As a result of the impact, Kumar fell onto the roadway, sustaining multiple injuries including lacerations and a broken right leg. He was picked up in an unconscious state by an ambulance and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was admitted a patient.

However, on Tuesday, Kumar succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.

Meanwhile, a breathalyzer test had been conducted on the motorcar driver, which revealed a reading of 0.04 micrograms of alcohol in his system.

On Wednesday, Evans appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court where in addition to the causing death by dangerous driving charge, he was also charged for having tint on his vehicle.

He was not required to plead to the causing death by dangerous driving charge and was placed on $600,000 bail. He was required to lodge his passport and to report to the Sparendaam Police Station every first Friday until the completion of the matter.

He also pleaded not guilty to the charge of ‘prohibition of tinted glass’, and was placed on $25,000 bail. This matter was adjourned to December 23, 2025.
