The teenage suspect who is being questioned over the fatal stabbing of a Corentyne laborer has reportedly told investigators that he feared for his life after allegedly being beaten during a confrontation at Nigg Village, Corentyne, Berbice. The teen’s lawyer claims there is evidence supporting the teen’s account of the fatal confrontation.
Attorney-at-law Vinay Punwa told the Evening News that the teenage suspect seemed scared and was crying. However, the youth was interviewed on Monday by officials of the Child Care and Protection Agency in the presence of police investigators, during which he reportedly detailed the events leading up to Friday’s fatal stabbing.
According to Punwa, the teenager said he was at a car wash putting air into his bicycle tires when 48-year-old Carter “Baboo” Baboolall rode past. He added that the teen claimed there was a verbal exchange before Baboolall allegedly returned and confronted him. The teen allegedly told investigators that he was cuffed several times and lashed with a piece of wood during the altercation.
“The child said he became scared,” the attorney related, adding that the teen claimed he reacted by stabbing the laborer once before fleeing the scene. The attorney further added that video footage corroborates the teenager’s account of what took place.
Baboolall, of Nigg New Housing Area, Corentyne, was stabbed once and pulled out of a trench close to the Nigg Post Office along the Corentyne Public Road. He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The teenager who escaped the scene later surrendered to the police.
The teen is expected to make a court appearance later in the week.
