At about 14:00 hrs today (Wednesday), acting on information received, ranks from Lethem Police Station proceeded to the Annai-Lethem Trail, where they intercepted a minibus (#BAD 6117), driven by Andel Awar, which was carrying six passengers — one female (Guyanese) and five males (four Brazilians and one Guyanese).
The driver and passengers were informed of the information received. The ranks requested to conduct a search of their persons and belongings. They agreed but requested that the search be conducted at the Lethem Police Station as they had been travelling since earlier in the day, and the sun was extremely hot on the trail. The minibus was subsequently escorted to the Lethem Police Station by two Detectives.
At the Lethem Police Station compound, the minibus was offloaded, and the passengers collected their bags and belongings. Ranks searched the passengers and their luggage.
One of the passengers — Sedney Aubrey Johnson, called ‘Cooliebai’, a 24-year-old male construction worker from Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara, had in his possession a blue and grey haversack which, when searched, contained three parcels wrapped in transparent plastic. The parcels were cut open, and each contained a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.
He was cautioned, arrested and placed into Police custody. The cannabis was weighed and amounted to 1,478 grams.
