A man was on Sunday afternoon killed by a lightning strike in Kako Village, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

He has been identified as Linson Smith, a father of four of Jawalla, Region Seven.

Toshao of Kako Village Romario Hastings told this publication that on Sunday, his community was hosting its Heritage Celebrations as part of Amerindian Heritage Month.

Smith was participating in the activities when a thunderstorm developed at around 17:00hrs.

The man was reportedly under a mango tree, holding an umbrella when he was struck by lightning.

“It ripped his clothes – his jeans, his shirt – and some debris of an umbrella was found on his chest too, it left this kind of wavy imprint on his chest, right where his heart is,” the Toshao said.

The victim was taken to the hospital in Kamarang where he was pronounced dead.

“It’s very unfortunate,” the Toshao said.
