Kevon Benjamin, a 39-year-old resident of La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara, was fatally on Saturday night.
The incident occurred at about 17:45h at a supermarket along the Beterverwagting Railway Embankment, ECD.
According to police investigations, Benjamin and a 46-year-old security officer were involved in an altercation, during which a firearm was allegedly discharged, resulting in Benjamin sustaining a gunshot injury to his abdomen.
Benjamin was transported to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he received emergency medical treatment. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The 46-year-old security officer was subsequently taken into Police custody. A 9mm Beretta firearm, along with a magazine containing 16 matching rounds of ammunition, was recovered and lodged pending further investigations.
Benjamin’s body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
The suspect remains in Police custody as investigations continue.
