[www.inewsguyana.com]A 39-year-old man of Lot 98 La Penitence Street, Georgetown, was refused bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after he was charged with robbery and assault.

Sherwin Munka pleaded not guilty to the robbery charge which alleged that on Wednesday, December 11 at Charlotte Street, Georgetown, he robbed Ghansham Ramdin of one Blackberry Cellular phone value $42,000.

He also pleaded not guilty to the assault offence, which alleged that on the same day at Charlotte Street, he unlawfully assaulted Mohamed Kamaluddin with the intent to commit robbery.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the Court that at around 23:30 hrs at Charlotte Street, the two victims were walking towards the minibus park when they were approached by the defendant.

It is alleged that Munka relieved Ramdin of his cellular phone and dealt his cousin Kamaluddin several cuffs about his body. The matter was reported and the cellular phone was found in Munka’s pants pocket.

Mangru successfully objected to bail, citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. He added that the defendant may pose as a flight risk and if granted bail, he may not return for his pretrial liberty. Munka was remanded and is scheduled to reappear in Court on January 17.
