A 53-year-old man was found hanging in a Mahdia Station cell on Wednesday while awaiting transportation to prison.

Dead is Shameer Khan of 111 Miles, Mahdia.

According to police information, the man’s body was discovered hanging in the station cell at around 15:40hrs.

INews understands that Khan was arrested and charged for a simple larceny offence, and fined $40,000.

However, as he was unable to pay the fine, he was ordered to face the alternate penalty which would have been serving eighteen months in jail.

After being placed in the cell to await transfer, Khan was found dead.

Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Shivpersaud Bacchus explained to this online publication on Friday that at the time leading up to the 53-year-old’s death, he was sharing a cell with two other men.

However, those men were reportedly asleep.

It is being speculated that the man took his own life.

Since then, his death has been categorised as “purported breaches of the Standard Operating Procedures regarding custody of prisoners” and the Police Office of Professional Responsibility has launched an investigation.

Khan’s body is presently at the Mahdia Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.
