The Ministry of Natural Resources today announced the launch of Guyana’s first major bamboo pilot project through the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC). The project aims to boost restoration and sustainable livelihoods in forest dependent communities.
Since 2023, the National Forest Restoration Initiative (NFRI), a collaborative effort between the GFC and the Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC) under the ministry, provided a framework for exploring restoration with consideration of non-timber and agroforestry pathways alongside native forest species.
According to a statement from the ministry, Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat brought bamboo to the forefront as a fast-growing revegetation option to create short-to-medium-term restored landscapes while supporting sustainable livelihoods and economies.
Today, a bamboo planting activity commenced under the project: “Piloting Bamboo for Restoration & Sustainable Livelihoods in Guyana.” The initiative is funded by the European Union (EU) under the Euroclima programme and will be implemented with technical assistance from Expertise France and the International Bamboo & Rattan Organisation (INBAR).
Almost 500 bamboo plants will be planted today at Coomacka, Region 10. This exercise will be replicated in other areas throughout the country.
Bamboo plants of the species Bambusa vulgaris var. vulgaris are being trialed for the restoration of a mined-out bauxite site in the old Coomacka mines area, close to the Maria Elizabeth/Three Friends community, with the technical guidance of INBAR.
Mining communities in Region 10: Maria Elizabeth/Three Friends, Coomacka, Old England/Siberien, Nottinghamshire, and Richmond Hill have been steady partners in designing a project that fits the context of their landscape.
“This flagship project continues to focus on actionable and tangible targets not only for bamboo trials but for building knowledge and capacity at all levels. It also sets the stage for dynamic partnerships in a new industry based in nature and sustainability,” the ministry’s statement noted.
In his Budget 2026 presentation, Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh had announced that the government is investing this year in expanded bamboo cultivation to support a pilot bamboo furniture manufacturing initiative.
