Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s Diwali Motorcade kicks off at 7pm tonight

The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha grand Diwali Motorcade is on for this evening.

In the lead-up to Monday’s Diwali celebration, the GHDS has been hosting countrywide motorcades and other events this month, including the two-day Deep Jale event and bazaar held at the Kitty Seawall Roundabout.

Today, the Sabha will hold its much-anticipated iconic Georgetown/East Coast Demerara Diwali Motorcade.

Almost 40 floats will be participating from Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice. The floats will assemble at the Shri Krishna Mandir in Campbellville, Georgetown, from 5:30pm (17:30h) and will leave at 7:00pm (19:00h) via its traditional route along Sandy Babb Street for Vlissengen Road and then along the Seawall to the LBI Community Centre Ground, East Coast Demerara.

The LBI Community Centre Ground will be the site for a fabulous cultural programme and presentation of prizes, starting at 7pm. The lineup of outstanding artistes includes Neval Chatelal, Vishale Samlall, Nishard Mayrhoo, Bunty Singh, Suraj Singh Dharmic Nritya Sangh, Berbice Delights, Shakti Strings Band and a folk dance troupe from India. Admission is free, and no alcohol will be allowed.

The iconic Diwali Motorcade is synonymous with the celebration of Diwali in Guyana and attracts tens of thousands of Guyanese and visitors from all cultures along the route and at the final venue annually.

See below for the Guyana Police Force’s traffic advisory for tonight’s Diwali Motorcade:

𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐂𝐀𝐃𝐄

Starting at the Shri Krishna Mandir Campbell Avenue, West along Campbell Avenue, North along J.B Singh Road, East Rupert Craig Highway, continue East along Sparendaam Public Road along the Northern Carriageway then continue East to La Bonne Intention (L.B.I) Public Road, South into the North Eastern Entrance of the La Bonne Intention (L.B.I) Community Centre Ground via the Southern Carriageway from Le Ressouvenir.
The following roads will be closed from 17:30 hours or later as the need arises) to facilitate this event:
• Campbell Avenue & Sheriff Street-No Entry West
• Campbell Avenue & Seaforth Street- No Entry North & South
• Campbell Avenue & Delph Street- No Entry North & South
• Campbell Avenue & Austin Street- No Entry North & South
• Campbell Avenue & Lamaha Street- No Entry North & South
• Sandy Bobb Street & Vlissengen Road-No Entry East
• J.B Singh & Thomas Land Roads- No Entry North
• Seawall Road & Kitty Roundabout- No Entry East
• Carifesta Avenue & Camp Street- No Entry East
• Sheriff Street & Rupert Craig Highway- No Entry East
• LBI Estate Road: closed to North Bound Traffic from Railway Embankment.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬

Motor vehicles will be allowed to park on the parapet (only) of the Northern/Southern Carriageway of Rupert Craig Highway for spectators to view the Motorcade completely off the road and drive lanes.

Motor vehicles will not be permitted to park on the Northern side of East Coast Pubic Road between Conversation Tree and the LBI Access Road. This is to aid the smooth, safe and unimpeded flow owing to the size of the floats on the move.

Motor vehicles proceeding west along the East Coast Public Road will be diverted at Agriculture Road, Mon Repos to the Railway Embankment to continue East or further West as directed by Traffic ranks on the basis of a need.

Persons proceeding East are advised to use Lamaha Street/ Homestretch Avenue, then North onto Sheriff Street, East onto the Railway Embankment or South along Mandela to Eccles Interlink.

Motorists will utilise the Ogle Bypass from the Railway Embankment for onward journey

• Northbound traffic along the Ogle Bypass will flow onto the Railway Embankment during the motorcade movement to LBI.

The Motorcade will be escorted along its route with Regional Traffic ranks led by Supt. R Clark assisted by ASP G Boyce (4 A: Georgetown) and Assistant Superintendent S Gobin assisted by Ch. Insp R Charles (4 C: East Coast) in the lead role of traffic management.

Traffic ranks will be at each fixed point, while motorcyclists will patrol the span of control.

Note: The Traffic Department urges Motorists to comply with directions by Police ranks who are directing traffic during the event and follow all Traffic Laws and Regulations. Spectators are urged to park in designated spaces, do not leave your motor vehicle in a dangerous position or have same cause obstruction. Persons are urged to report or correct the errant actions of fellow motorists without violence or confrontation. Calls to the 911 are free for all reporting purposes.
