GPHC’s new $282M CT scanner fully operational

Patients can now benefit from faster, higher-quality CT imaging services at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), following the full operationalisation of the hospital’s new CT scanner on Monday.

The GYD 282,058,200 investment delivers clearer, higher-resolution images to support more accurate diagnoses, strengthens radiation-protection measures, and improves the efficiency of patient examinations. The new system also enhances patient comfort through multilingual instructions that help patients better understand and follow directions during their scans.

The scanner became fully operational following specialised training for GPHC’s radiologists, radiographers, CT technologists, and support staff who will deliver the service.

GPHC’s previous CT scanner experienced frequent technical issues and extended periods of downtime.

During that time, the corporation partnered with private healthcare providers to ensure that urgent and critically ill patients continued to receive CT scans at no cost to them, with GPHC covering the full expense. However, some non-urgent patients experienced longer waiting times.

With the new scanner now in operation, the Medical Imaging Department will focus on reducing the existing backlog, shortening waiting times, and strengthening diagnostic support for departments including Accident and Emergency, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Cardiology.

A CT (Computed Tomography) scanner uses X-rays and advanced computer technology to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body, helping doctors diagnose injuries, diseases, and a wide range of medical conditions.

This investment forms part of GPHC’s continued commitment to modernising healthcare services and improving patient care. Looking ahead, the hospital’s new Medical Imaging Centre will house an additional CT scanner, the first MRI machine within Guyana’s public healthcare system, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, and other advanced diagnostic imaging services.
