The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Wednesday welcomed a five-member delegation from the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China on, as part of an official visit focused on strengthening health cooperation, medical exchanges, and knowledge sharing between China and Guyana.

The delegation is in Guyana from August 31 to September 4, 2026, with the visit aimed at supporting the supervision and evaluation of foreign-aid medical teams in Guyana, while further deepening collaboration in the health sector. The visit was facilitated through the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Guyana.

Upon arrival at GPHC, the delegation was welcomed by Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Robbie Rambarran; Director of Medical and Professional Services, Dr. Navindranuath Rambaran; and other senior hospital officials at the entrance of the New Inpatient Facility.

The delegation toured several specialised services across GPHC, including the Hepatobiliary Laboratory, Eye Clinic and Acupuncture Clinic; areas where specialists from the 21st Chinese Medical Brigade have been based and working during their nearly year-long assignment at GPHC. During the visit to the Acupuncture Clinic, the delegation observed treatments being provided to patients and gained insight into the Brigade’s contribution to patient care.

The 21st Chinese Medical Brigade has worked alongside GPHC healthcare professionals, supporting specialised care while facilitating the exchange of knowledge, skills and clinical expertise. The Brigade is expected to conclude its assignment at GPHC shortly.

The partnership also continues to support the professional development of Guyanese healthcare workers.

As part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Health of Guyana and the Government of the People’s Republic of China, nine GPHC doctors will travel to China to pursue advanced medical training in several areas of specialisation. The training is intended to strengthen specialised capacity at GPHC and further equip local healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver quality healthcare to Guyanese and the growing number of foreigners seeking healthcare services in Guyana.

The visit concluded with an official photo opportunity at the Main Operating Theatre (MOT) lobby, featuring an official gift exchange and group photograph, symbolising the continued friendship and cooperation between Guyana and China.

The five-member delegation comprises representatives from China’s National Health Commission, including officials from the International Health Exchange and Cooperation Centre and the Department of International Cooperation. The delegation includes an Advisor, Deputy Director General, Senior Programme Officer, Programme Officers and a staff member.

GPHC said it values its longstanding relationship with China and the opportunities created through international health cooperation. Through medical exchanges, specialist training, and knowledge-sharing, these partnerships help strengthen healthcare capacity in Guyana and support GPHC’s continued commitment to providing safe, quality, and specialised healthcare to the people of Guyana and all who seek care at the national referral hospital.
