The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will be providing assistance with the roll-out of the physical education (PE) curriculum in schools, according to Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo.

President Dr Irfaan Ali recently announced that all public schools will now move to dedicate Friday afternoons to physical education classes.

During his press conference on Thursday, the Vice President explained that this initiative stems from the government’s commitment to listen to citizens’ concerns and take action.

“The government listens to the people …We are now going back to a culture of re-introducing sports as a means of staying healthy, making it a key part of our learning system,” he said.

In this regard, Jagdeo revealed that the GDF will be involved in this process.

“That means training more teachers, especially PE teachers, and getting the army involved…the President was just telling me about the army helping out in the beginning—doing fitness programmes in schools, and so on,” the Vice President noted.
