The Civil Defence Commission (CDC), in collaboration with the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Department and the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, continues to coordinate response operations following an incident involving a barge located at a private wharf on the East Bank of Demerara.

The vessel, reportedly carrying approximately 8,000 barrels of waste oil, was observed listing significantly while berthed at the facility. Following the initial assessment, immediate implementation of containment and mitigation measures was taken to minimise potential environmental impacts.

As part of the ongoing response, containment booms were deployed around the affected vessel as a precautionary measure to restrict the movement of any oil. Additionally, corrective measures were taken to stabilise the vessel. The vessel is now upright and stabilised with its cargo intact.

The relevant authorities continue to assess and monitor the situation, with response personnel and resources mobilised to support containment, recovery, and environmental protection efforts.

The CDC wishes to assure the public that the situation remains stable and under control, with coordinated response operations ongoing.

The Commission remains committed to working closely with its partner agencies to ensure that the situation is effectively managed and that appropriate measures are implemented to protect the environment and public safety.
