A fire of so far unknown origin has destroyed a Chinese-owned supermarket at Charity, Essequibo Coast.

The fire erupted at about 13:30rs today at the Best Choice Supermarket which is owned by Siyi Zheng.

The supermarket occupied the lower flat of the two-storey building owned by Guyanese businessesman, Haimchandra Narine, who lived in the upper flat with his family.

The supermarket owner related to authorities that she was inside the cashier booth when a staff informed her that there is a fire in the ceiling.

The businesswoman said she picked up a fire extinguisher and attempted to extinguish the blaze, but it began to spread rapidly.

She further stated that she and her staff ran out of the supermarket, after which the entire building became engulfed in flames.

An individual, who was the only person in the upper flat of the building at the time, also exited.

The fire service was contacted but despite their efforts, the entire building was destroyed.
