Police have now taken five persons into custody as investigations continue into the murder of 23-year-old Chittesh Sukhai, called “Rohan” and “Marsho”, of Friendship Village, Corentyne. Sukhai, a fisherman who worked on his father’s boat, was chopped several times during an incident at Friendship on Monday evening.
Police had initially arrested two men, ages 27 and 23, of Friendship and Limlair villages respectively, in connection with the incident. Since then, investigators have arrested two additional men; a 19-year-old and a 28-year-old, both of Friendship Village.
A 47-year-old woman has also been taken into custody as police continue to gather evidence. The woman is said to be an aunt of the now dead fisherman.
The development comes as investigators continue their probe into the circumstances surrounding Sukhai’s death. A woman who was initially arrested on suspicion of being an accomplice remains part of the investigation.
According to preliminary police information, Sukhai was involved in an argument with a female relative shortly before several men arrived at the location armed with cutlasses. Sukhai was chopped several times about his body before running from the scene and collapsing in a nearby yard.
He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. Police said two cutlasses suspected to have been used in the attack were recovered in the vicinity. Sukhai’s body was subsequently taken to Ramoo’s Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
