The Guyana Police Force is investigating a shooting incident which occurred on Sunday April 12, 2026 about 17:00hrs, at Chanta Creek, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a Detective Sergeant was at the creek with family members when he had a misunderstanding with several males and was allegedly attacked with a cutlass.

Further investigations revealed that he discharged a round from his Force-issued .9mm pistol in their direction, during which a 37-year-old gold miner of Yarrowkabra Creek, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, sustained a suspected gunshot injury to his right leg.

The injured man was picked up by relatives along with police ranks and rushed to the McKenzie Hospital, where he is presently receiving treatment. His condition is listed as stable.

The rank was placed under close arrest in relation to the matter.

Investigations are continuing and further details will be provided as appropriate.
