Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Sunday April 12, 2026 about 21:00hrs, on Williamsburg Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, involving motor lorry GVV 5043, driven by a 27-year-old male of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara and motorcycle CR 1603, driven by Haresh Gopilall, a 31-year-old male of Williamsburg Village, Corentyne, Berbice, (deceased), with a 27-year-old male pillion rider of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Initial enquiries revealed that motor lorry GVV 5043 was proceeding east along the northern driving lane at an alleged normal rate of speed, while motorcycle CR 1603 was proceeding in the opposite direction at an alleged fast rate of speed. As the motorcycle was about to pass the lorry, the lorry driver reportedly made a sudden right turn into the path of the motorcycle, which caused a collision on the southern driving lane.
As a result of the collision, the driver and pillion rider were flung from the motorcycle onto the road surface, where they received injuries about their bodies. They were picked up in a semi-conscious condition by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where they were seen and examined by a doctor on duty. The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead on arrival, while the pillion rider was treated and referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted in a stable condition, suffering from a fractured left jaw and left clavicle.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Ramoo’s Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver of the motor lorry gave readings of 31 and 32 micrograms, respectively.
Investigations are ongoing.
