Police are investigating the alleged drowning of Raj Birsa, a 44-year-old Contractor of Ruby Backdam, East Bank Essequibo, which occurred at about 19:00 hrs on 2025-07-05 at Ruby Backdam.
Enquiries disclosed that the deceased was consuming alcohol at a shop when he got up to urinate near the main drainage canal in the area, and fell into the canal. At the time, the ‘koker’ was opened with the water current ‘pulling’ in a northern direction, and Birsa was drawn in the said direction. As a result, the Police were summoned to the scene.
On arrival, several persons were at the scene where a search party was formed and the motionless body of Birsa was located about two hours after and about sixty feet from where he had fallen.
The body was escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital by the Police, where he was seen and examined by a doctor and pronounced dead. The body was also examined by the Police, and no mark of violence was seen.
The body was escorted to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, awaiting a PME.
