The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), has recognised eight hospitals across Guyana with “Baby-Friendly” designations.
The designations were achieved as part of Phase One of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), a global programme launched by the WHO and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1991.
The initiative is aimed at protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding by ensuring maternity facilities follow evidence-based practices that improve infant feeding outcomes.
The hospitals recognised were the Oscar Joseph District Hospital and Suddie Public Hospital, both on the Essequibo Coast; St Joseph Mercy Hospital, Georgetown; Bartica Regional Hospital; Mahdia District Hospital; Lethem Regional Hospital; Kwakwani District Hospital; and Linden Hospital Complex.
The recognitions were done during a ceremony on Friday evening at the PAHO Headquarters in Georgetown. Phase Two of the initiative is expected later this year, as Guyana continues to advance maternal and child health nationwide.
