Approximately 14 community grounds and sporting facilities across Region 10 have been identified for upgrades as the government moves to improve recreational spaces for budding and seasoned athletes and communities.
Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs and Minister of Labour and Manpower Planning Keoma Griffith inspected the facilities on Sunday to determine their infrastructural and sporting needs.
The site visits are a result of a recent outreach to the region led by Vice-President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, during which residents raised concerns about the sporting facilities.
The assessment covered the Bamia Playfield, Central Amelia’s Ward, South Amelia’s Ward/Lovers Lane, Kara Kara Playfield, Speightland, Retrieve Hardcourt, Industrial Area and the Maria Elizabeth Playfield at Three Friends.
Other facilities inspected included the Coomacka Mines Playfield, Old England (Siberien) Ground, Silver City Playfield, Victory Valley, Blueberry Hill Playfield and Block 22 Ground.
The exercise focused on identifying priority works such as the installation of lighting, fencing, rehabilitation of playing surfaces, construction and improvement of washroom facilities, court upgrades and the provision of sporting equipment.
It aims to ensure youths have access to safe, functional and well-equipped spaces where they can play, train and compete.
In addition, the government is pushing to establish dedicated tape ball cricket facilities in every administrative region as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots sports. [DPI]
