Seven ex-inmates are now recipients of tool kits which will aid their reintegration into society, as part of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ ‘Fresh Start’ programme being executed through the Guyana Prison Service (GPS).
One of the former inmates, Lennox Syfox received a welding kit while Tulaseam Kumar is beneficiary of complete tailoring kit. Four of the ex-inmates: Matthew Johnson, Victor Kippins, Raphael Mantos and Romel Rowley were the beneficiaries of one brush cutter each while Winston Moriah received carpentry tools.
At separate handing over ceremonies recently, Prisoners’ Welfare and Correctional Officer, Tassa McGarrell, explained that the programme is dedicated to reducing criminal recidivism by aiding ex-convicts to gain access to resources and to provide the necessary motivation for success.
The ex-inmates were considered for the Fresh Start tool kit based on a number of criteria while in prison, which included participation in training programmes, conducting reviews, family support, and a post-release plan.
Through the programme the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) recorded a remarkable reduction in recidivism rates for 2024, signalling a positive trend in the rehabilitation of offenders within the country’s correctional system.
Meanwhile, in 2024, 28 inmates received tools and equipment to earn a sustainable income in various fields, including cosmetology, tailoring, welding, carpentry, joinery and landscaping. [Press Release]
