Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d), the Honourable Mark Phillips, today received a technical briefing from the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and key response agencies on reports of flooding in several communities across Region Nine, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo, following continued heavy rainfall.

The briefing, which was held with representatives of the Civil Defence Commission, the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Police Force and other technical officers, focused on the current situation in affected areas, reported access challenges, and the readiness of response mechanisms should additional support be required.

During the briefing, Prime Minister Phillips was informed that reports of flooding had been received from several communities, including St Ignatius, Annai, Aranaputa, Karasabai, Masekenari and Aishalton. Officials advised that, based on the information currently available, the flooding has primarily affected transportation and access routes, while assessments are continuing at the community and household levels.
The meeting also examined the systems in place to support affected communities should the situation worsen. Discussions included continued communication with affected villages, monitoring of water levels, assessment of possible food and medical needs, and the identification of potential shelters, if required.

The Prime Minister, under whose purview the Civil Defence Commission falls, directed that response efforts be channelled through the CDC’s regional mechanism in Region Nine, working closely with regional officials, the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Police Force and other response agencies.

Prime Minister Phillips underscored the importance of continued monitoring, timely reporting and close coordination. He called for regular situation reports to ensure that agencies remain updated as conditions develop and to guide the response.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, the Honourable Priya Manickchand, and Regional Chairman, Mr Karl Singh, also joined the meeting virtually and provided input from the regional level.
