Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Wednesday June 17, 2026, about 17:10hrs, on Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara, involving motor lorry #GAP 5043, driven by a 29-year-old male of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara and Kwatta, Suriname and an unregistered electric cycle ridden by Lal Singh, a 61-year-old of New Hope, East Bank Demerara.

Initial enquiries revealed that the motor lorry was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane of Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara, in a line of slow-moving traffic. The driver reportedly felt the lorry go over a hump and later heard someone shouting for him to stop. He then stopped and reversed a short distance, after which Singh was observed lying under the left side of the lorry, near the front wheel, with injuries about his body, while the electric cycle was nearby.

As a result of the accident, Singh sustained injuries about his body. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned and he was picked up in a semi-conscious condition and conveyed to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and later succumbed while receiving medical treatment.

The body was escorted to Sandy’s Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Two breathalyzer tests were conducted on the driver and no trace of alcohol was found in his breath.

The driver is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.

Investigations are ongoing.
