West Indies unveiled a 16- member squad that will soon take on Australia in an anticipated 5- match T20 series. Highlighting the squad announcement was news of Andre Russell’s likely retirement on home soil.

West Indies’ T20 International team will be looking to compensate for the recent disastrous Test Series as they head out onto the park to take on visitors Australia in a 5- match series.

The action will bowl off at Sabina Park in Jamaica on Sunday, July 20, where the Test team just managed their lowest score in the history of the game. Following the second game on July 22, the action will move to Warner Park for the remaining three matches.

Once again, the T20 team will be led by Captain Shai Hope with four Guyanese players highlighting the outfit. All currently competing for the Guyana Amazon warriors in the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League, those players are Shimron Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford, Gudakesh Motie and Romario Shepherd.

Meanwhile, 18- year- old batting sensation Jewel Andrew has earned his maiden call- up, alongside pacer, Jediah Blades. The remainder of the West Indies squad reads: Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Rovman Powell and Andre Russell.

Head Coach Daren Sammy said about the upcoming series, “Our goals and strategic plans are aligned to winning the T20 World Cup in 2026. We have continuity in the squad from the previous series and as a unit we will continue to fine tune our style and brand ahead of the World Cup.”

He added regarding their recent outings, “Our previous two T20 series at home we were on the wrong end of the results but starting against Australia, we want to regain our form at home as we build momentum into next year’s World Cup with our exciting and dynamic group of players.”

Meanwhile, the pair of T20Is in Jamaica will be of special significance since it will mark the end of a long and illustrious international career for Andre Russell. Reports on Tuesday indicate that Russell will seize the opportunity to retire in his beloved format at home after some 15 years of donning the West Indies’ maroon.

All 5 matches in the T20 series will bowl off at 19:00hrs local time.
