Driver license portal launch: Digital platform strengthens integrity of licensing process – Min Walrond

In keeping with President Dr Irfaan Ali’s vision for greater accountability, transparency and safety on Guyana’s roadway, a new Driver’s License Portal was launched on the Guyana Digital School’s platform, modernising the process through which prospective drivers complete their theoretical examinations.

The launch coincides with National Road Safety Month 2026, which is being held under the theme “Every life matters. Every road user has a responsibility.”

The initiative, a collaborative effort involving the Ministries of Education, Home Affairs and Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Revenue Authority, will make the examination process more accessible, efficient and transparent.

Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation Minister, Zulfikar Ally said the platform represents a significant step towards building a modern public service, while encouraging young people to embrace integrity and accountability.

“Your score will be generated based on the correct answers that you’re given, and AI will judge that for you, and it doesn’t discriminate,” the minister explained.

He challenged students to reject the culture of purchasing a driver’s license and instead take pride in completing the required examinations and practical assessments legitimately.

Home Affairs Minister, Oneidge Walrond, said the digital platform strengthens the integrity of the licensing process by ensuring that every applicant is assessed fairly and that personal connections or influence cannot determine the outcome.

She noted that the initiative goes beyond convenience, as properly assessing drivers is critical to protecting lives and improving road safety.

“A driver’s license must represent competence, and not simply a completion of a process,” Minister Walrond stated.

Meanwhile, Education Minister, Sonia Parag, explained that the transition also introduces driver education into the school curriculum, with students expected to begin benefiting from the programme in 2027.

The theoretical examination will be completed online, while practical assessments will remain part of the licensing process.

Additionally, Traffic Chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Mahendra Singh underscored that integrating road safety education into the school system will help develop a generation of disciplined, informed, and responsible road users.

The initiative compliments the government’s wider digital transformation agenda, aimed at improving public service delivery while strengthening transparency and accountability. (DPI)
