Police in Regional Division #7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) are investigating the alleged murder of 25-year-old Marinda Ernest, a farmer of Philippai Village, Upper Mazaruni River, which reportedly occurred between 19:00h and 20:00h on Friday, August 28, 2026.
Initial investigations revealed that Ernest and her 23-year-old reputed husband had earlier joined approximately 40 villagers in a self-help exercise at a farm located about one hour’s walk from their residence.
This exercise concluded at approximately 16:00 hrs, after which the couple departed for home. The reputed husband claimed that, while travelling along the main trail, he briefly entered the bushes and, upon returning, could not locate Ernest. He reportedly proceeded home but did not find her there.
According to the man, he returned to the trail and conducted a search, during which he discovered Ernest’s unclothed and motionless body among bushes near a stream. He subsequently alerted villagers.
The matter was reported to the Police at approximately 07:00 hrs on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Investigators visited the scene later that day.
Upon the Police arrival, Ernest’s body was found beneath a shed, covered with a sheet.
An examination of the body revealed what appeared to be a puncture wound below the left breast, another puncture wound to the back, and abrasions to the back and left leg.
The body is presently awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The reputed husband remains in Police custody, assisting with the investigation.
Investigations are ongoing.
