Wounded bandit escapes police guard at GPHC

– Public Security Minister says situation embarrassing 

A suspected bandit who was being treated that the Georgetown Public Hospital for a gunshot wound to his back, and was under police guard, managed to escape on Wednesday morning.

The wanted man was identified as 18-year-old Milford Jeffery.

Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan has since described the situation as an “embarrassing” one, given the amount of training and resources being plugged in the Guyana Police Force.

Based on information received, Jeffery was arrested following an exchange of gunfire with him and police last week. As such, he sustained an injury to his back, and underwent surgery.

Inews was told that around 02:00hrs the police officer who was supposed to be guarding the wanted man fell asleep.

Jeffery reportedly used this opportunity to flee.

Investigations are ongoing.
