The Ministry of Housing is developing a dedicated truck stop and parking facility at Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, as part of government’s efforts to improve traffic management, protect public infrastructure, and support Guyana’s rapidly expanding construction sector.

On Thursday, Minister of Housing, Collin Croal and Minister within the Ministry,  Vanessa Benn met with contractors and inspected the site, alongside Deputy Director of CH&PA’s Projects Department, Mr. Intakab Indarjeet and engineers.

Minister Benn explained that the initiative is intended to provide a designated space for heavy-duty vehicles, while addressing the growing issue of trucks parking along public roadways.

“The intent is to provide a space […] so that they do not park on the roads, damaging the road shoulders and the edges of the roads where so much investment is being made to improve the road networks for our fellow citizens,” Minister Benn stated.

With Guyana’s growing economy driving a surge in construction activity, the number of large trucks operating across the country has increased significantly. The new facility is therefore designed to enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and prevent damage caused by trucks and other large vehicles parking along road shoulders and within residential corridors.

The approximately 14-acre site is currently undergoing sand-filling and leveling works.

Contractors on site were reminded to ensure works meet the required standards while adhering strictly to project timelines. Minister Benn noted that upon completion, the Ministry will engage truck owners and operators who are interested in utilising the facility, particularly those without suitable private parking spaces.

Minister Benn underscored that the project forms part of Government’s broader push for a more coordinated approach to development, noting that the construction sector continues to expand at a rapid pace with 25% growth recorded in the previous year.

“With development moving at such a fast pace, we must ensure we have the facilities in place to support it,” Minister Benn said, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to organized growth and sustainable infrastructure planning.

The Ministry of Housing continues to advance initiatives that improve safety, support economic expansion, and protect national investments in road and housing infrastructure.
