‘Third lane’ system discontinued

Traffic Chief Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Singh has taken a decision to halt the third lane system on the country’s roadways.

This measure was initially introduced to bring relief to commuters during rush hour traffic periods on the East Bank and East Coast of Demerara.

But in light of yesterday’s fatal accident which claimed the life of a 15-year-old while the third lane system was in effect, the Traffic Chief said a decision has been made to bring an end to the practice.

He lamented that too many road users do not operate with road safety as a priority, reminding that just a week ago, another road used lost his life during the third lane system.

The Traffic Chief reminded that when approaching a pedestrian crossing, drivers must slow down and give way to road users on foot. Priority, he added, must be given to children and the elderly.

Meanwhile, with the third lane system discontinued, the Traffic Chief assured that ranks will be strategically positioned along the country’s roadways to help with the smooth flow of traffic.
