US-sanctioned Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and Police Constable Ryan Greene have been remanded to prison over the unauthorised release of footage from the Guyana Police Force’s Command Centre.
The duo appeared before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Friday where the prosecution and defence presented arguments on whether they should be granted bail.
In delivering her decision, Magistrate Gibbs said the court considered the circumstances surrounding Mohamed’s other ongoing legal matters, including his extradition proceedings and existing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and attempting to obstruct the course of justice, for which bail had previously been granted.
Magistrate Gibbs said she was concerned that, if released on bail, the defendants were likely to commit another offence. As such, she refused bail to both men.
Both men were remanded to prison until November 24.
Reports are that the 20-year-old police constable downloaded footage from the Force’s Safe City surveillance system and handed it to Mohamed in return for $800,000.
The footage relates to an October 12 incident outside the Kitty, Georgetown, residence of Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Narine, Head of the Force’s Special Branch Unit and who is a witness in the extradition hearing before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
