A taxi driver lost his life on Tuesday night after the car he was driving crashed into a lamp post and a tree along the Cullen Public Road on the Essequibo Coast.
Dead is 34-year-old Floyd Ricardo Mal of Lot 79, Huis’t Dieren, Essequibo Coast.
Reports indicate that the accident occurred at about 21:30h along a section of the roadway known for a right-hand bend. Mal was reportedly driving motor car HD 8678, which is owned by Yonette Sargeant of Pomona.
According to information received, the vehicle was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane when the driver allegedly lost control. The car reportedly veered off the roadway and collided with a lamp post before striking a nearby signboard and eventually crashing into a tree.
Public-spirited residents reportedly rushed to the scene and assisted in removing the injured driver from the wreckage. He was subsequently transported to the Suddie Public Hospital for medical attention.
However, Mal was pronounced dead at about 22:35h while receiving treatment at the medical facility.
Police who visited the scene have since commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
Mal’s body was later identified by his wife, Sherika Mal, and has been taken to the Suddie Public Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Mal’s son is currently writing the National Grade Six Assessments (NGSA) today and tomorrow.
