Celebrating light, unity & renewal – ERC extends Diwali greetings to Nation

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) extends warm and heartfelt Diwali greetings to the Hindu community and all Guyanese as the nation prepares to celebrate the Festival of Lights on Sunday, November 8, 2026.

Diwali, derived from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning “a row of lights”, is one of Hinduism’s most cherished festivals. Principally observed through the performance of Maha Lakshmi Puja, the occasion symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Beyond its religious significance, Diwali represents spiritual renewal, inner clarity, hope and prosperity.

The five-day observance, which begins with Dhanteras and concludes with Bhai Dooj, provides an opportunity for prayer, reflection and the strengthening of family bonds. The lighting of diyas is a particularly meaningful tradition, symbolising the aspiration for light and goodness to illuminate every aspect of human existence.

The deeper message of Diwali invites us to embrace the pursuit of knowledge, teaching and learning, and to recognise that enlightenment is not merely the absence of darkness, but a commitment to personal growth, understanding and the betterment of humanity. Its enduring ideals remind us that when we allow wisdom, compassion and goodwill to guide our actions, we contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous society.

In Guyana, Diwali has become a cherished part of our national heritage, celebrated and appreciated by people of diverse backgrounds. It is another of our festivities that bring our people together.

The festival offers an important reminder that our cultural and religious differences enrich our national identity, while our shared aspirations for peace, respect and progress unite us. The light celebrated in every home and community can also serve as a symbol of the understanding, tolerance and harmony that we must continue to nurture as a nation.

The Ethnic Relations Commission wishes the Hindu community and all Guyanese a safe, joyful and blessed Diwali. May the light of this auspicious occasion illuminate every home, inspire goodwill and strengthen the bonds that unite us.

Shubh Deepavali!

Let the Triumph of Light inspire unity, dignity and respect – GTUC

The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) extends warm and heartfelt Deepavali greetings to the Hindu community and all Guyanese celebrating this sacred Festival of Lights.

Deepavali symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. The lighting of diyas represents the illumination of the human spirit and the enduring values of truth, righteousness, compassion and responsibility.

These values transcend religious boundaries and carry profound meaning for our collective existence as a nation.

Deepavali must be more than an annual celebration marked by the lighting of homes, the sharing of sweets and family gatherings. Its deeper message calls on every individual, institution and leader to reflect on how we treat one another and whether our actions contribute to a society founded on justice, fairness and mutual respect.

For Guyana, a nation enriched by diverse ethnicities, religions and cultural traditions, Deepavali offers an important lesson about nationhood. Our diversity must never become an instrument of division, discrimination or political exploitation. Instead, it must be recognised as a source of collective strength, shared identity and national enrichment.

Nationhood cannot be built on ceremonial expressions of unity while citizens experience discrimination, exclusion, disrespect or unequal treatment. National progress must be measured not only by economic growth and infrastructure development, but also by the dignity afforded to every citizen, the protection of their rights and the fairness of opportunities available to all.

The GTUC maintains that no individual should be diminished because of race, religion, political affiliation, social standing or economic circumstances. Every worker and citizen deserves dignity, respect and the opportunity to participate meaningfully in shaping the country’s future.

The light of Deepavali should inspire us to confront injustice, reject intolerance, challenge discrimination and stand against practices that undermine the rights and wellbeing of others. It must also remind those entrusted with public leadership that their responsibility is to serve all citizens, not a select few.

As we celebrate this festival, let us recognise that building a just, peaceful and inclusive Guyana is a shared responsibility. The light we kindle in our homes must also shine in our workplaces, communities, institutions and national conduct.

The GTUC wishes the Hindu community and all Guyanese a peaceful, joyous and spiritually fulfilling Deepavali.

May truth overcome injustice, respect replace intolerance, and unity, dignity and equal rights illuminate our journey towards a stronger and more inclusive Guyana.

Happy Deepavali!
