An autopsy conducted on the body of 32-year-old Gavin Douglas, who died whilst in police custody at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station on Saturday, found that he had suffered blunt force trauma to the head, resulting in his demise.

The autopsy also found visible marks of violence on the man’s body.

According to the police, Douglas, of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara (WCD), was arrested on Saturday in connection with an alleged robbery under arms committed on October 28, at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop.

The police said Douglas was escorted to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station at approximately 11:36 hours. And at about noon, while being placed into the lock-ups, he reportedly became aggressive and resisted police ranks.

Police said Douglas was subsequently restrained and placed in the lock-ups. At approximately 12:45 hours, Douglas was reportedly observed frothing at the mouth during a check of the lock-ups. He was subsequently rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he died while receiving medical attention.

The matter is being investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility, with Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond, assuring a probe that is thorough, impartial and conducted with urgency.
