The police have intercepted a large shipment of suspected cyanide at the Burnside checkpoint in Coronie, which is believed to have been illegally brought into Suriname from Guyana. According to information obtained by Starnieuws, it involves more than two tons of the dangerous chemical.
The cargo was transported in two trucks. Several people have been arrested in connection with the transport. The shipment was to be transported to Paramaribo.
The exact quantity, the origin of the shipment, and the final destination are still under investigation. It must also be officially determined exactly what type of cyanide-containing product is involved and whether permits were in place for the import and transport.
The interception is noteworthy given the heightened focus on the import, transport, and use of cyanide in Suriname. Cyanide is used in gold mining, among other things, but poses a serious danger to people and the environment if stored, transported, or used improperly.
The government has previously indicated that the import of cyanide is subject to regulations. Following serious problems surrounding the use of cyanide in the gold sector, it was decided to take stricter action against irresponsible use. [Starnieuws]
