On Friday afternoon, Minister of Public Works Hon. Juan Edghill and Minister within the Ministry Hon. Madanlall Ramraj met with the senior staff of the Transport and Harbours Department, the minister’s boardroom.
The meeting sought to determine and remedy as far as practicable, the various issues on the vessels ranging from maintenance of equipment to safety inspections and the dwelling conditions of the vessel. Also raised, was the potential concerns of ‘sabotage’.

Both Ministers Edghill and Ramraj addressed the series of reoccurring issues and sought justification by the senior staff of T&HD.
And emerging from the meeting were the following measures, effective immediately:
– Mandatory inspections with routine engine servicing and a new checklist l to protect passengers.
– Enhanced maintenance procedures with strict adherence to safety regulations
– Heightened regulation standards for operators including random testing of boat operators for alcohol and drug consumption
These measures are part of a broader goal by government to regulate the transportation sector and improve safety standards.
