Underscoring the importance of security in hinterland communities, President Dr Irfaan Ali on Monday revealed that the Guyana Government will be issuing some 250 firearm licences to these villages.

He was at the time speaking during the opening ceremony of the National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference 2025.

“Security is very important, and we had about 250 requests from Toshaos, leaders and other village elders or persons recommended from the villages for firearm/shotgun licences, for the protection of the villages…I am pleased to tell you today that every one of those applications was processed and you will get those licences,” President Ali said.

Toshaos from Amerindian communities across Guyana are meeting at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) for the National Toshaos Conference (NTC) from today, Monday, May 19, 2025 to Friday, May 23, 2025.

The annual event is being held under the theme “Robust Governance for Sustainable Village Development.”
