Police in Regional Division #9 (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), on Friday arrested Tony Joseph, a 54-year-old farmer of Shiri Village, South Central Rupununi after he allegedly threatened to shoot several village councillors over a domestic issue.
Acting on reports from the councillors, a team of Police ranks visited Shiri Village, where the suspect along with his 33-year-old girlfriend, were found at the home of his cousin. During a search of the premises, the ranks found an unloaded single-barrel shotgun without a serial number.
The suspect was subsequently escorted to his home, located a short distance away, where a further search was conducted. There, ranks found a plastic bag containing five live cartridges, five spent shells, and two plastic tubes containing gunpowder.
Joseph was then arrested, and taken to the Lethem Police Station along with the seized firearm, ammunition, and gunpowder, which were photographed, marked, and lodged as exhibits.
During an interview with detectives, the suspect claimed that the shotgun belonged to his cousin, but claimed that the cartridges were his. He further stated that he purchased the cartridges from Brazil and would usually sell them to other farmers.
Efforts are being made by Police to locate the suspect’s cousin, at whose home the shotgun was found.
Investigations are ongoing.
