The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has completed the recount of all 395 ballot boxes in sub-district four (East Coast Demerara) of Region Four, as was requested by the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

This update was provided by GECOM Commissioner Sase Gunraj via social media, where he noted that stakeholders will now move onto the recount of 77 boxes from Region Five, as was also requested by the APNU.

The recount exercise commenced yesterday morning at GECOM’s Barrack and High Streets location in Georgetown.

So far, the recount has produced no significant changes to the results of Monday’s General and Regional Elections, which show that President Dr Irfaan Ali has been re-elected to serve a second term.

Ali’s party – the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) – secured a landslide victory with 242,498 votes, based on the results declared by the returning officers for each of the voting districts.

This represents an impressive lead of over 100,000 votes over the party’s nearest political rival.
