Prompt action by staff contains fire in Nurses’ Room at GPHC’s Maternity Unit

Quick response by staff on duty saw a fire being extinguished earlier this evening in the Maternity Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

In a statement, the city hospital confirmed the incident, which occurred at around 18:50h in the nurses’ rest room within the Maternity Unit.

This publication understands that a fan had caught on fire and was promptly put out. No injuries were reported, according to the GPHC.

Fire Incident in Nurses’ Room – GPHC Maternity Unit 

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) wishes to inform the public that at approximately 6:50 p.m. today, Saturday, August 29, 2026, a spontaneous fire occurred in the nurses’ rest room within the Maternity Unit.

The fire was promptly identified and extinguished by a doctor and a nurse, and the Guyana Fire Services was also contacted and responded to the incident.

As a precautionary measure, patients in the affected area were evacuated to ensure their safety. The situation has since been brought under control, and patients have all been moved back into the ward

GPHC is pleased to confirm that no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Management commends and thanks the staff for their diligence, quick response and prompt action in extinguishing the fire and ensuring the safety of patients and colleagues.
