Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces President Dr Irfaan Ali today announced the promotion of over 2000 police officers.
Addressing hundreds of officers at the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Headquarters, the President acknowledged their hard work and service over the years and announced that, with effect from August 1, 2025, ranks who have attained the requisite years of service and have no disciplinary action against them are to be promoted.
This promotion will see ranks move up from Constable to Lance Corporal, Lance Corporal to Corporal, Corporal to Sergeant, and Sergeant to Inspector.
Specifically, the president announced that cops who are Corporal for 8-10 years will be moved to the highest level on the scale and so their salaries will be adjusted accordingly.
Additionally, those who are Constable with 5-7 years of service will be promoted to Lance Corporal at the highest level of the scale while those Constables with 8-10 years in the system will be moved to Corporal at the highest level of the scale.
Meanwhile, he said those with 10-13 years of service will be promoted to Sergeant at the middle of the scale and those with 13-15 will go as Sergeant at the highest level of the scale.
All those in the system with 20 and more years of service who are not at the level of Inspector will be adjusted to be an Inspector, at the starting of the scale.
More than 2,000 ranks will benefit from these promotions.
According to President Ali, there will now be a higher system of evaluation for promotion.
One of the criteria, he outlined, would be how well officers treat the GPF’s assets. “If yall ain’t keep the assets and station in good standing, everybody will come down”.
He further emphasised the goal to build a professional GPF and warned that if officers are caught “doing anything illegal, taking anything you’re not supposed to take, you’re out of the Force”.
“The ball is in your court, the responsibility is in your hand,” the president emphasised, adding that “with greater rewards, come greater responsibility”.
President Ali also urged police officers to get fit. “When people see the Guyana Police Force, they must see strength, fitness…,” he said. “Those who are doing protection service, you ain’t gotto sit down in a hut, walk with a skipping rope…you ain’t gotto sit down for eight hours, every hour, do five minutes of skipping”.
Meanwhile, the Guyanese leader encouraged all officers to seek higher education, especially now since its free of cost to do so at the University of Guyana as well as through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL). “There is no excuse,” he said.
President Ali noted that he only has five more years to serve if re-elected and within that time, “I want to leave the best possible Police Force with the best standards…but we have to work together, this is a collective effort”.
