President Dr Irfaan Ali of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has firmly stated that the party’s election campaign is being financed independently, without the use of State resources.

He made this clarification today in response to a report released by the Carter Center ahead of the General and Regional Elections scheduled for September 1.

“Our party, as you know, might have been the only party that would have had so many fundraisers, you would have seen it all across the country. So, we’ve been able to raise enough resources with the love and support of the people, with the love and support of our supporters and members, and we have been able to raise enough resources to efficiently carry out our campaign and our work for these elections,” the PPP/C presidential candidate told reporters today at Base Camp Ayanganna where he had visited to observe polling day activities during the Disciplined Services voting.

“So, there’s no need for State resources and State resources have not been deployed to support our campaign,” President Ali affirmed.

In its report, the Cater Center raised concerns over what it termed the “misuse of State resources”. The report also expressed concern that banks in Guyana might be over-complying with US sanctions by closing the personal accounts of approximately 40 WIN candidates, party members, and associates. WIN was formed by US-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed who is running as the presidential candidate.

Responding to questions on this matter, President Ali highlighted that local banks do not operate in isolation of the global financial system.

“Our financial institutions are part of the global financial system and that is what people don’t understand, this is not a government giving instruction, these are banks operating within global standards and within a global financial system that can penalise them,” the president posited.
