The Guyana Oil and Gas Energy Chamber (GOGEC) welcomes the Government of Guyana’s decision to establish a distinguished five-member international Commission of Inquiry to investigate the tragic sinking of the MV Barima.
The appointment of respected experts in maritime law, marine engineering, navigation, and judicial affairs reflects the Government’s commitment to ensuring a comprehensive, transparent, and impartial examination of the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking national tragedy.
GOGEC commends His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the Government for taking decisive action to pursue accountability and strengthen public confidence in the investigative process.
The Chamber recognizes that the loss of lives and the profound impact on the affected families and communities demand a thorough and credible investigation. The inclusion of internationally recognized professionals from Belize, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Poland demonstrates Guyana’s commitment to adhering to the highest standards of governance, justice, and maritime safety. GOGEC is confident that the Commission’s findings will provide valuable recommendations to enhance maritime operations, improve safety protocols, and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
