Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips today said that Lethem in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) is currently benefiting from more electricity than they are utilising.
PM Phillips, who has responsibility for the power sector in the current People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government, was at the time speaking at the party’s elections rally being held at the Commercial Zone in Lethem, today.
The Prime Minister reminded that he had commissioned mini-hydropower projects at Moco Moco and Kumu as well as established a solar farm at Lethem and repaired transmission lines there.
“The PPP/C Government has given you more electricity than you can use now… But we want you to use it,” Phillips told scores of supporters.
According to the PM, the government wants more people to enjoy the elecricity and so he encouraged persons especially at Kumu, Moco Moco and surrounding communities to ensure they wire their houses.
“Wire your houses so we can connect you… We have the distribution system we’re building out, and we want to connect every house so you can utilise the power. That is what we believe in – power to the people,” PM Phillips declared.
Back in July, it was reported that Region Nine’s total generating capacity was 5.2 megawatts (MW). Currently, the peak electricity demand in the Lethem township is 2 MW.
Nevertheless, the Prime Minister assured that the next PPP/C Administration will continue working to bring not just power but continued development to every community across the region.
“Once we’re in office, our people must not only survive, they must thrive,“ the PM Phillips stated.
