Excavation works done as part of the ongoing road expansion works along the Railway Embankment resulted in several utility poles falling this morning and according to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc., power is expected to be restored by 18:00h or 6 pm.

GPL team carrying out remedial works on the fallen poles
GPL is currently conducting remedial works between Liliendaal and the University of Guyana (UG) Road along the Railway and Embankment.

The power company said it received a report at approximately 10:50h today of the fallen poles between Liliendaal and UG Road.

“On arrival, our team discovered that a number of poles had fallen as a result of excavation works. Due to the extent of the damage, affected customers will remain without power while corrective work is carried out,” GPL said this morning.

In a subsequent update on the fallen poles this afternoon, the power company said, “Remedial works are still ongoing between Liliendaal and UG Road after four poles fell as a result of excavation works. Power is expected to be restored to affected customers at approximately 18:00hrs.”

GPL has been complaining bitterly about damages caused to its utility infrastructure by contractors.

Only in December, some nine concrete poles were uprooted by road construction works along the Aubrey Barker Road, plunging some 2000 households in South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, into more than 18 hours of power outage.

It was subsequently announced that the contractor responsible for that incident was blacklisted.
