Armed bandits, fleeing from robbery at Unity, injured after crashing getaway motorcycle

Two young men are currently hospitalised under police guard after they crashed while attempting to flee from a robbery scene at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.

Based on police reports, the robbery occurred at around 12:05 hours today (Saturday, May 2, 2026) at Unity, Mahaica.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a 32-year-old shopkeeper was in her shop when two suspects approached and demanded money. The men then reportedly began searching through drawers and other areas of the shop for cash.

The victim reportedly ran from the shop, during which the suspects discharged a round in her direction. She subsequently fainted and was taken to the hospital by public-spirited citizens.

The suspects then attempted to flee; however, they were pursued by persons in the area along with police ranks. During the pursuit, they reportedly collided with a motor car and were apprehended by ranks.

A firearm and motorcycle were recovered, and both suspects, a 21-year-old male of 9 Field, Sophia and a 20-year-old male of Cummings Lodge, are presently receiving medical attention at the Enmore Regional Hospital for multiple injuries.

Investigations are ongoing.
