Police intercepts truck driver with 50 rounds of ammunition, ganja at checkpoint

A 48-year-old truck driver was taken into custody on Saturday following the discovery of a quantity of ganja and 50 live rounds of 9mm Luger ammunition at the 70 KM Police Checkpoint, Cuyuni, Region Seven.

Police stated that on the day in question, at about 6:10h, ranks on duty intercepted a motor lorry bearing registration number GYY 2105, after the driver reportedly attempted to pass the checkpoint.

The vehicle was subsequently escorted to the Police Outpost, where a search of his person and the motor lorry was conducted.

During the search, six bulky parcels were found inside two traveling bags with cannabis. A further search uncovered a box that contained the ammunition.

The driver from Carmichael Street, Georgetown, remains in custody pending investigations and charges.
