Over 80 WCD households affected by major overtopping

Approximately 85 households along the West Coast Demerara were impacted by significant flooding today following a major overtopping event. The affected communities stretch from Cornelia Ida through Hague Jib to Fellowship, with floodwaters inundating the bottom flats of homes and depositing silt throughout the area.

The Hague Nursery School was also affected, with its entrance completely submerged.

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC), in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), conducted an initial assessment to determine the extent of the damage and evaluate whether resident relocation was necessary. However, no residents opted to move to shelters when approached by CDC officials.

In response, the NDC provided meals to impacted households and deployed part-time workers to assist with clearing debris. The CDC distributed cleaning supplies to all affected households and the Hague Nursery School.

Residents were advised by the CDC that overtopping due to spring tide is expected to continue over the next 48 hours. They were urged to secure their belongings and, if necessary, vacate the area for their safety.
