Newlywed killed in “accident” by truck driver days before assault case in court

A young man, who recently tied the knot was, on Wednesday, struck down and killed by a speeding lorry at Supply, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

The deceased has been identified as Alex Persaud, 22, of Timehri Base Road, EBD.

Based on reports received, the victim was reportedly standing on the parapet when the lorry swerved and struck him down. He reportedly died at the scene.

INews understands that the truck driver and the victim were expected to appear in court on Monday, August 18, in an assault case.

Reports are that the suspect had reportedly assaulted the victim’s cousin. However, this resulted in a heated argument between Persaud and the suspect which led to an altercation. As such, both of them were charged.

Relatives believe that Persaud was intentionally struck down by the driver, who hails from Soesdyke, EBD.

After the accident, the driver reportedly drove the lorry to Sarah Johanna, where he parked it and went into hiding. The police have initiated a manhunt for him.

Persaud got married less than a month ago.

Investigations are ongoing.
