[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Ministry of Home Affairs, through the Guyana Passport Office, will soon be releasing new machine readable passports with enhanced security measures.

passportThis was announced by Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee during his contribution to the 2013 budget debate on Monday evening (April 07).

Rohee said that this decision was taken after it was discovered that the current passports are being tampered with and persons are stealing identities for criminal intent.

In July 2007, government launched the Machine Readable Passport system to protect against multiple issuance of the travel document. The system is geared towards strengthening strategic alliances against illegal immigration and smuggling, improve management of the nation’s borders and ports of entry and also assist in the fight against terrorism, immigrant smuggling and trafficking in persons.[Fareeza Haniff]
