Days after 28-year-old Budnarine Persaud from Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice (WCB) escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison, police have confirmed that he was recaptured at No. 65 Fisheries along the Corentyne Coast, Region Six.
Persaud reportedly escaped on Monday afternoon while he was assigned to cleaning duties within the compound. Persaud, along with others, had reportedly been working in the area for several days.
However, Persaud allegedly breached the access point and exited through the same gate used by a group of civilian workers who were contracted to perform the duties.
Meanwhile, acting on information received, police travelled to No. 65 Fisheries in the wee hours of Wednesday and searched a fishing vessel, during which Persaud was found hiding in the bow. He was recaptured and taken to the Springlands Police Station, where he was placed into custody pending investigation into his escape from lawful custody.
In addition, six other persons – four men and two women-were arrested in connection with the alleged harbouring of the prison escapee. They remain in custody pending investigations.
